My Sister's Garden
Pictures from my sister's small but lovely garden taken in late May, 2008. The garden relies primarily on shape, form and foliage color rather than flowers. The first five pictues are of her front garden (and you can see that her next door neighbor employs a similar style in her front garden), while the others show her main garden behind her house. The photos are in order, following the curve of the garden around a small central lawn area.

See them all here.

Beautiful! Thank you for sharing. I love all the hostas - I have several myself.

See - they grow here in the midwest, too, so that's something you'll still be able to have when you get here! :-)

Fabulous garden! Great mix of textures and colors and I can't see a single weed.

While I love flowers, I love that she's made this garden non-dependent on blossoms. It looks wonderful all season and she has enough things blooming - a lot of clemati vines for one - that change still occurs and keeps it interesting. And no, there aren't any weeds. (Kind of makes me want to smack her around a bit...) :-)

A lovely garden and great photos. You can see all the careful choices of plants to give such texture.
Japanese maples are a favorites and all those hostas!

May is wonderful, isn't it.

One of my favorite garden months, when everything looks so fresh and lovely.

I deeply envy those Japanese maples, which would never grow for me just 15 miles away - my gardens are far too exposed.

Her garden has evolved beautifully. I love visiting. :-)

How colourful &...complete, in spite of a lack of flowers. Wow, I love the idea. Hmmm... ;)

Can you give us a general 'where in the US' she lives? I'm in the Pacific NW, but the non-rainy side...wondered how much could work here...
Mary[info]mary5958 on June 2nd, 2008 10:04 pm (UTC)
She lives near Madison, Wisconsin. That's Zone 5 and she has a fairly protected yard which really helps those Japanese maples to succeed. They wouldn't work for me. Though I'm only 15 miles away from her, my site is much more exposed and I consider it to be Zone 4.

There are annuals in the pots that add splashes of color and she has a number of clematis vines that add their bold flowers as well for a good part of the summer.

But I agree that she's done an amazing job of making it all so interesting without depending on blossoms.

Glad you like! :-)

ETA: And I LOVE your icon!

Wow! I am jealous. Do you think your sister would want to dig in some Maine dirt? LOL. I really must do something with my landscaping.. or lack thereof. Her yard is beautiful!

Hee! She's done a wonderful job, hasn't she? Makes me wish she'd come do some digging in my dirt!!

That is a beautiful garden, lovingly tended. And her house looks charming, too. Very, very homey.

She doesn't a beautiful job with it and, being retired, has the time to keep it up perfectly. *iz jealous*

My sibs all have very different houses from one another, but I love every one of them; each is filled with personality - something every house needs and many lack. :-)

Hello there;

You have been persona non around here on LJ for the last few months. Hope everything is going well for you and yours. Last we heard was the awful weather, I think.

I post because I am wondering where you are...but also because...I have started work on that original fiction I mentioned once upon a time to you. I have some questions about the North Woods of Wisconsin and general tiny, rural town color. I don't think you are anywhere near Birchwood or Hayward...which is where I am looking to set the tale...but you are closer than I am.

If you are able to brainstorm with me...give me a wave at Rabid1st@yahoo.com with your new email addy. The one I have in my address book is from 2003. Sheesh! I should write more often.
